I’m always intrigued by poems about home and roots etc as my life has always been about movement and I’ve never really had one so the concept is endlessly fascinating to me. Very well done with reluctance making footprints on every line.

searched on the phrase “drab squares” and found this poem by you – give you a thumb up for using it. scanned through a bit of your work – good stuff…hardly comes up anywhere else online, as far as i can see, so it’s an unusual phrase, created perhaps only by you and me and not too many others…

All the metaphors work with a persuasive coherence.The tone of resignation, the mulling of what-ifs, man’s adaptability — these, to me, ring clear in these ten lines.
